Heating Element Calculations

Electrical power, voltage across the element terminals and resistance are the basic starting data for heating element calculations. The calculator below calculates the nominal resistance and current of a single purely resistive element at the specified operating point.

Technical selection and application

This electrical calculation alone does not determine wire diameter, wire length or winding geometry. The alloy's temperature-dependent resistance change, wire surface loading, heat transfer and support arrangement must also be assessed. In a three-phase system, do not use total power directly as single-element power; connection configuration and values per branch are required.

We can calculate the power required for your furnace

We can calculate the heating power required for your furnace to reach its target temperature according to your process and insulation conditions. The heat required by the product and supports to be heated, furnace warm-up and heat losses during operation are assessed together.

For a power calculation, share the furnace's internal dimensions, starting and target temperatures, type and weight of material to be heated, required heating time, insulation layers and their thicknesses. Also specify door-opening frequency, ventilation and whether operation is continuous or cyclic. Technical drawings and photographs help us refine the assessment.

Wire length and temperature correction

The resistance of a wire is assessed using R = ρ × L / A, where ρ is resistivity, L is length and A is cross-sectional area; the units used must be consistent. Resistance at room temperature is converted to operating temperature using the manufacturer's temperature correction factor. Factors for different alloys referred to by the same name must not automatically be assumed equal.

After the electrical calculation

Wire diameter and length selection must be checked together with wire temperature, surface loading, winding geometry, support material and operating atmosphere. The calculator's nominal resistance result alone is not a manufacturing dimension.

Resistance calculation from power and voltage

Formulas: R = V² / P and I = P / V. Power is used in watts in the formula. The result is the nominal value at the operating point; cold wire resistance depends on the temperature coefficient.
