Ni-Cr Resistance Wire

Ni-Cr wire is a group of nickel-chromium-based resistance heating wires. It is also known as nichrome wire. Alloys with different nickel and chromium ratios are available; not all Ni-Cr wires have the same electrical and thermal properties.
Technical selection and application
For electric heating elements, the appropriate grade is selected according to wire temperature, winding configuration, mechanical support and operating atmosphere. When replacing wire in an existing heating element, matching the diameter alone is insufficient; resistance per unit length and total element resistance must also be checked.
Ni-Cr alloy options
Nickel-chromium alloys are available in different compositions such as 80/20 and 70/30; some types also contain iron. These are not different names for the same wire. Even closely related commercial grades may have manufacturer-specific differences in resistivity, composition and temperature coefficient.
Furnace and heating elements
Suitable Ni-Cr types can be used in electric furnaces and high-temperature heating elements. Heating and cooling cycles and the oxidizing or reducing nature of the atmosphere are also considered in alloy selection. Clearly specifying the alloy grade in the technical specification helps ensure correct wire selection.
